The End of Civilization as We Know It

According to a report on the CBC and confirmed by the Globe and Mail this morning, the entire BlackBerry network in the Western Hemisphere has crashed.

I wouldn't have one of those things if you paid me. I grudgingly carry a cellphone, and when I got it, I told the salesman I didn't want one that took pictures, played music, text-messaged, or did anything more than made and received phone calls. If they'd had one with a rotary dial, that's the one I would have gotten.

I'm not a complete Luddite, but I do believe that there's a time and a place for everything, and just because technology can provide us with the ability to talk on the phone and drive at the same time -- which, according to the people who keep track of such things, has caused a surge in traffic accidents -- or send e-mails while you're sitting on the biffy, it doesn't mean you should.

The news report went on to say that when the BlackBerry system is restored, it will be so overloaded with queued-up messages that it will crash again, and probably cause a ripple effect in the entire communications infrastructure. How this will effect the sales at Starbucks across the country has yet to be determined.

Update: CNN says it's back. It was nice while it lasted.
