One interesting perspective on the debate comes from Kathryn Jean Lopez of the National Review, who says
In response to more than a few answers tonight — on Iraq, on China — I've said, "she sounds reasonable." If I were a normal America [sic], I think I'd really think that.As Taylor Marsh notes, "Let's face it, if the NRO has taken to announcing Clinton 'sounds reasonable,' she's on track, especially for the general."
That's really hard to admit. I still have both "Clinton Hater" and "Vast-Right-Wing Conspiracy" cards in my wallet.
And if the NRO is saying Hillary Clinton sounds reasonable, that is the surest way to ensure that she will triangulate the party; pissing off the liberals, not frightening the DLC, and covering all her bases in between. Having liberals angry at her inoculates her against all but the most rabid of the Hillary-haters, and when more people start paying attention to this campaign, they're going to find out that she's not the monster the Orcosphere has portrayed her as, and they're going to wonder what all the fuss was about. And it's also going to show that the GOP, with all their demonization torpedoes at the ready, are going to look pretty ridiculous -- not to mention misogynistic -- if they unload their full force on a "reasonable" Hillary Clinton.
