If you want to listen to a desperate Sen. Larry Craig try to bluff, bluster, and then basically try to beg his way out of his predicament in the Minneapolis Airport Police interrogation room, go to Crooks and Liars and tune in.
It's pretty hard to listen to this and not come to the conclusion that Mr. Craig is very aware of the fact that he is up Shit Creek, but still he goes on, lying to the police officer, who finally, in a resigned tone of exasperation, sighs that this is what's wrong with this country; the people with whom we entrust our lives and our security can't 'fess up when they mess up.
I'm also willing to bet that had the Senator said something along the lines of "Hey, you know what, you're right. I did it, it was stupid, I'm sorry, and I'll pay the fine," the cops would have had it within their discretion to let him off with a warning. But Mr. Craig just made it worse, and is compounding it now with his blame-shifting to the Idaho Statesman and his pathetic press conference, which started with the Freudian slip of all time: "Thank you all for coming out."
Mr. Craig was one of the more vocal critics of Bill Clinton for his his sexual escapades and took him to task for lying about it. The meme at the time was, "Just tell the truth and face the consequences." It sounds like some advice that the senator forgot.
